Energy
efficient heating should be a high priority if you are trying to reduce
your electric bill. Before you even spend any money to replace equipment,
however, there are steps you can take to make your equipment more
energy efficient. Check all the gas (or oil), connections and your
gas pressure. Also, clean or change the air filters once a month in
your furnace or heat pump.
If your ducts are not sealed and insulated correctly you cannot have
energy efficient heating. Inefficient or leaking ducts can reduce
your efficiency by as much as 20%, so seal off the ducts that run
through the attic, basement, or garage. After that wrap the ducts
with insulation. Finally, seal off all the ducts that you can access
in the heated part of your house.
If you have had your equipment for more than 10 years and it still
does not keep you comfortable, it is probably time to upgrade to energy
efficient heating. Have a contractor examine it, and if it needs upgrading,
shop for a high-efficiency Energy Star unit. However, before you shell
out large amounts of money double-check for any big air leaks.
