For
guest bedrooms or workspaces, energy efficient portable heaters allow
you to heat certain rooms or areas without affecting the temperature
of the rest of the house. They also provide an alternative to costly
or inadequate heating systems.
Energy efficient portable heaters come in a variety of choices to
fit your needs.
Space heaters can use common fuels such as propane, natural gas and
kerosene as well as electricity. Some portable heaters rely on the
circulation of the air in a room (convection) in order to heat a room.
However, other heaters rely on radiant heating. Radiant heating is
the infrared radiation emitted which heats up objects and the people
within the line of site. If heating a room for only a few hours, radiant
heaters are more efficient.
Energy efficient portable heaters can also be vented or “vent
free.” Vent free units are not recommended for use inside your
home because they allow unwanted combustion products into the air
(such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxides, and water vapor). Vented
units, however, can be permanently located next to an outside wall
providing a safe release area for combustion products. When purchasing
a vented unit, look for “sealed combustion” or “100%
outdoor air” units. Electric space heaters are the only vent-free
heater that is still safe to operate in your house.
