With
all the talk about green hot water heaters going around, there are
many people looking to see if they can afford the initial costs associated
with one of these new heaters.
If you find you cannot afford to buy one, you can take a few steps
to make your own green hot water heaters. You can do this by doing
the following:
• Gather the necessary supplies that you need. In this case,
all you really need to make more efficient and green hot water heaters
are aluminum tape, aluminum foil, and a hot water heater jacket.
• The first thing you need to do is clean off your old hot
water heater. This does not involve a thorough cleaning, but you should
at least wipe it off a bit.
• Take some aluminum foil and cut several pieces of it into
approximately two foot lengths. As you cut each one, set it aside
and try not to crumple it. You will use it a bit later.
• After each piece of foil has been cut out, you then need
to make use of the aluminum tape. Although you may not just have this
tape sitting around at your home, there are a number of places it
can be purchased. Any hardware store should have it. Using small pieces
of the tape, tape the pieces of the foil to the side of the hot water
heater. Overlap each piece about three inches or so. You can do as
many layers as you’d like. It may be best to do two or three.
Do not tape aluminum foil to the top or the bottom of the heater.
• You are on your way to creating green hot water heaters if
you continue to follow this same process. The next thing you need
to do is make sure the tape is all securely attached. Your hot water
heater should look something like a giant silver can.
• Now, install the hot water heater jacket as recommended by
the manufacturer of the jacket. These jackets can also be purchased
at the hardware store.
Doing these things will make your hot water heaters much more effective
at saving energy. This means that you can have green hot water heaters
without having to purchase new appliances.
